Despite the terrific historic value of Stephen Smith's article on the Goodman family and their direct line to the founders of the Sasieni pipe, I want to make one demurrer, one with which I feel Stephen and every other member of our little coterie will agree, given a little reflection.
Stephen refers to the late Barry Levin as the Patron Saint of pipe hobbyists, and that title has long been correctly consigned to the recently departed Tom Dunn, the producer of “The Pipe Smoker's Ephemeris.”
Any argument is mooted by the fact that as committed and generous as Barry might have been, he did it for the money, as do I. Not even three miracles (and I did once fill an inside straight ... leaving me only two more to go before possible consideration) can qualify someone for sainthood if they did their good works for money.
Tom Dunn did it solely for love, and his good works were the result of unselfish sacrifice. He is, incontrovertibly, our Patron Saint, the founder and eternal leader of The Universal Coterie of Pipe Smokers.
In every single other respect, thank you, Stephen, for that great story.
